A Carpenter’s Son Design Co. was born when founders Josh and Laura Scheutzow began using woodworking to raise funds for their domestic adoption. They sold over 500 Ohio-shaped cutting boards, and their son was born that Christmas.

2016

Focusing primarily on tables and bar tops, Josh (and a few dear friends) decided to dip their toes into the world of furniture making. Sharing a 900-square-foot shop with Urbn Timber, ACS completed their first commercial projects in 2016: Surehouse Coffee, Rockmill Tavern, and TENFOLD. Keeping it in the family, Josh’s father, Paul, would drive from Cleveland to help with all of the big projects.

Leaving his job in the construction industry, Josh decided to take the leap and pursue ACS full-time. Opportunities arose to collaborate with several other small businesses in the Central Ohio area. In 2017, ACS built furniture for local favorites Hot Chicken Takeover, Native Cold Pressed, and The Rail Burger.

2018

While renovating an 1830s farmhouse in Sunbury, Ohio, the Scheutzow family began building a 2,500 square-foot workshop in the backyard. The first proper home of ACS was born. The team continued to grow as the fourth full-time team member was added, and later that year, ACS became COhatch's official furniture partner.

ACS expanded its community involvement, hosting farmers' markets and backyard concerts. In the shop, ACS worked on unique Airbnb projects like The Box Hop, Dunlap Hollow, The Cliffs, and The Dwell Box Treehouse Village, as well as built furniture for dozens of families across Ohio and beyond. In collaboration with TENFOLD, ACS built furniture for the Crew Experience Center, providing fans a sneak peek at the new soccer stadium coming to Columbus.

The team expanded to eleven talented furniture makers and finishers as ACS navigated the pandemic. Doing its best to care for clients and team, every Friday was spent sitting around a fire behind the shop celebrating the week's successes and enjoying the camaraderie of a small team.

The hard decision was made to leave the backyard shop and move the business back to Columbus. To give the team the resources they needed to do their best work, ACS expanded to a 10,000 square-foot shop in Worthington. During that year, ACS had the privilege of crafting over 240 pieces of furniture at Lower.com Stadium, the new home of the Columbus Crew.

A professional furniture designer joined ACS and began challenging the team with unique designs and new techniques. With its reach extending, ACS contributed to large hospitality projects across the nation. Locally, ACS built and installed some of the largest boardroom tables the team has ever produced.
